In the foothills and the mountains
Oghuz lies on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus — in one of the greenest and most picturesque corners of Azerbaijan. Mountain ridges rise above the district; the highest point is Mount Malkamud at 3,879 metres. To the north the district borders Russia's Dagestan.
The slopes are covered with dense forests, between them run the swift Alijanchay and Qalachay rivers, waterfalls sound and clean springs gush. This is a land for those who love mountains, coolness and the silence of nature.
Green slopes
The forested mountains of Oghuz are its chief wealth. Beneath the forest canopy streams and rivers run, the air is cool and clean. These places long gave the inhabitants timber, water, nuts and game, and today they draw lovers of nature and mountain walks.
Khalkhal and Qaynama
Oghuz is famed for its water. In the mountains the Khalkhal waterfall hides away, while by the town the famous Qaynama spring gushes — a 'boiling' source where the water seems to bubble up from the ground. Clean mountain springs watered both locals and travellers for centuries.
A mountain land for the soul
Today the nature of Oghuz is also a place of rest: zones by the rivers, cafés above the gorges, trails to the waterfalls. The cool foothills of the Greater Caucasus have become a corner for those who seek quiet, greenery and fresh mountain air.
